Sport

GAMES

The last term of each year is devoted to extra games.  This is reserved for players trying to make the rugby team.  Various drills and plays are tried and usually the year culminates with the Prep Schools’ Finals and then hopefully qualification for the Northern Ireland Primary Schools’ Finals at Ravenhill.

Many of the boys have already gained valuable match practice by playing at Academy Rugby Football Club (mini section) which has a strong link, and shares pitches, with the school at Roughfort.

If time permits some sessions have been held in the evenings with parents helping out as coaches.  This has helped give this extra-curricular activity a professional feel.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Ben Madigan Cross-Country Club has enjoyed a very successful season, with over 50 pupils being involved every Tuesday after school.  The club is run by Mrs Wilson and Mr Johnston and caters for pupils in Preps 4 – 7.  The school is part of the ’30, 40, 50’ club which, in association with the Northern Ireland Athletics Federation, encourages pupils to run between 30 and 50 miles over the course of a school year.

As well as our weekly school practice, pupils have been entering into competitive primary school races at different venues including Jordanstown, Stormont, Moira and Belfast.  The main aim of the competitions is fun, enjoyment and to get children active; however we also have had our fair share of medal winners and top finishers.

Overall it has been a very long but successful season for Ben Madigan Cross-Country and both Mrs Wilson and Mr Johnston have been very impressed by the level of commitment, enthusiasm and determination shown by every pupil involved.
