Music & Drama

Music
Music teaching at Ben Madigan in both Key Stages 1 and 2 is comprised of the following elements:

  • Making and Responding to Music
  • Composing
  • Performing
  • Listening and Responding

These are taught in class as part of the music curriculum and qualified music specialists teach the Prep. 5 to 7 classes.  Every child is given the opportunity to perform (normally in a class unit) twice per year at the school Carol Service or Nativity presentation and at our Summer Concert.

Music-making is actively encouraged at Ben Madigan.  The school choir meets every Wednesday after school.  The members sing regularly at both school and outside events.  Our annual Carol Service is held in Whitehouse Presbyterian Church and the choir has also performed at the opening of the Cinemagic Festival in the Odyssey complex.

At present, tuition is offered in piano, classical singing, music theatre and flute by an experienced private tutor.  Pupils are entered for external exams, administered by the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and the London College of Music.

Drama

This will develop initially from play activities such as the ‘house corner’ but opportunities of a more directed nature will then be introduced including script work and polished improvisation.  Children are encouraged to perform for their class, for the whole school and for parents and others.
