Talking and listening
In Ben Madigan children are encouraged to become confident speakers, able to express opinions clearly, answer questions and perform in front of an audience. They are also enabled to become active and thoughtful listeners.
Reading
We believe that it is vitally important for children to not only read fluently but with understanding and enjoyment. To this end, we employ a variety of strategies. Pupils are taught to read initially using mainly the synthetic phonics method. Reading schemes such as Longman Book Project and Oxford Reading Tree are used and then as the children become independent readers, novels are introduced. Book clubs and fairs encourage book ownership and from Prep. 3 onwards regular use of the school library extends pupils’ reading.
Writing – Secretarial
Aspects of handwriting, grammar, punctuation and spelling are taught formally and reinforced throughout the school.
Writing
Children are taught to write using a variety of genres and for a wide range of purposes. They learn to edit their own work, often using ICT both in editing and in presenting their work imaginatively and appropriately.
