Ben Madigan is the Preparatory Department of Belfast Royal Academy. The Academy is the oldest school in Belfast, having been founded in 1785. There has been a Preparatory Department since 1829. It has changed site several times and, during the war, four branch preparatory schools were opened in Portrush, Ballygally, Donaghadee and Cookstown.

Ben Madigan moved to its present site, just below the tree line on Cave Hill, in 1965. The building was opened by the Governor of Northern Ireland, the Lord Erskine of Rerrick. A new kindergarten building for the youngest children was later added. This was opened by H.R.H. Princess Anne in May 1985. Further extension provided a library (1992) and a new office and staffroom facilities (1995).

In September 1998, a Pre-prep class for 3-4 year olds was introduced, together with before and after-school childcare.
